FAQ

What is BlastStation?
With BlastStation you can perform BLAST homology searches and find DNA or proteins which has the similar sequences from the databases.  NCBI BLAST searches using the EBI server, WU-Blast2 searches using the EBI server, and local NCBI BLAST searches on your PC are currently supported with BlastStation2.  All searches are done with the same easy to use interface.

What are the differences between BlastStations?
BlastStation2 is the flagship BlastStation with which you can perform NCBI BLAST searches using the EBI server, WU-Blast2 searches using the EBI server, and local NCBI BLAST searches on your PC.
BlastStation-Local is specialized to local NCBI BLAST searches.
BlastStation-Local64 is specialized to 64-bit local NCBI BLAST+ searches.
BlastStation-Workgroup is web-based 64-bit local BlastStation designed for small to mid-sized groups.
BlastStation-Free is free edition of BlastStation2 with some restrictions.

How to perform faster local BLAST search on my PC?
When you perform local BLAST search on your PC, BLAST program will be executed as one process.  Since many programs are executed at the same time on Windows PC or Macintosh computer, the BLAST process can't utilize 100% of the CPU performance and utilization ratio is not always the same.  If there are many processes running on your PC, the elapsed time to perform BLAST search will be longer and the search speed will be slower.  In order to get the highest performance of the local BLAST, please quit unnecessary programs and do not use your PC during the searches.

Is it possible to create BLAST database from my FASTQ or SCARF data?
BlastStation accepts only FASTA data to create BLAST databases.  FASTQ or SCARF data will be converted to FASTA data by the script called fq_all2std.pl in Maq package.  This script is found here

How I can specify identifiers in my local BLAST database?

When creating local database, please specify identifier in the description line for each FASTA datum like
> lcl|identifier
Then create database with Indexing ON in Create DB window. The default Indexing is OFF.
Identi
fiers will be shown in accession column in BlastStation Results pane.
The details of how to specify identifier are found here

When I launch BlastStation, it says "We have not yet received your payment. BlastStation will not start until payment is received." and it won't start.  I purchased BlastStation license, though.
BlastStation license is one CPU license.   That means your license is allowed to use on one PC only.  When you attempt to use the same license on more than two PCs, this message will be shown.  If you purchase new PC and want to transfer your license to the new one, please submit license transfer request from here. We accept license transfer request once in 6 months.

Do you have volume discount program for multiple licenses?
Yes.  Discount rate depend on the number of licenses you purchase at the same time.  Please ask for details.
